Vargo: Imperial Survey History Fresh Blood It all seemed to be a pointless waste. So much blood and tears had been shed, and all for naught. In five years the Vau would wipe it all out in a single stroke, for reasons no one could fathom. What point was there in sacrificing more for the sake of a doomed world? Yet even as some Known Worlders packed up their belongings and left, abandoning Vargo to its fate, and others sought escape from their despair at the bottom of a bottle or other diversions of the flesh, a trickle of newcomers began to arrive through the starport. Some came to Vargo because they were mad, seeking the fulfillment of their millennial obsessions on the first world that would fall to the End Times. Others came in search of riches, hoping to plunder what they could from Vargo before the final curtain fell. And a few, a precious few, they came in answer to loftier motives. They came to lend their hands, and their swords, to the cause of saving Vargo's human inhabitants from the grim fate decreed by the Vau. Maybe one of them will find the answer in time.
