Michael
came to Vargo an untested youth, full of the enthusiasm that
is typical of young men, wanting action and results now rather
than in the future. Towards that end, he eyed the city of
Port Llewellyn on the southern coast of the main continent
as a possible prize to be won for his house. He gathered
his troops and made an alliance with the Brother Battle,
striking suddenly in the night with a commando operation
to secure the docks and the ships there, then landing an
assault lander in the main square of the city, capturing
the Civil Guard barracks and Coast Guard barracks in bloody,
hand to hand fighting before the survivors surrendered.
After
the victory, however, came the winning of the peace. The
people of Port Llewellyn, who had seen themselves as neutral
towards the Known Worlders, awoke to a change in the nobility
and ownership of the city. Some accepted, some did not care,
and some actively resisted, taking to the rural areas outside
the city to fight to protect their homes. This point was
driven home to Michael by the Reverend Mother of the city
Cathedral, who got a pledge of making a public show of repentance
for failing to fully investigate the political situation
of the city prior to invading. To that end, Michael made
a trip through the Taramor region, without his guards and
armies, escorted by native Vargens, to learn more about the
people and their customs and to gain a better appreciation
for the problems faced by the natives of this world.
Even
as he finished this pilgrimage and was beginning improvements
to the infrastructure of Port Llewellyn and new business
ventures, a sneak attack on the city came from the city of
Rionnach, where members of the Veda family and local rebels
struck back in an attempt to free the city of the Hawkwood
and Known World influence. With the assistance of the VDF,
this assault, which featured genetic monsters of local design,
as well as advanced weapon systems seen for the first time,
was beaten off. Then came the Kurgen war, followed by the
invasion of the undead and their demon allies, causing more
misery and damage to the Hawkwoods and the city. When all
was said and done, the Port Llewellyn region and the city
itself had taken quite a beating. But, the Hawkwoods still
ruled the city and nearby countryside and now look outward
with both diplomatic and military might at their neighbors
to expand their influence as well as provide better security
for the people they now rule.
