Anselm,
a seasoned spacer in his middle years, has reportedly piloted
everything from fighter craft to dreadnoughts. He spent the
early part of his career in the service of the Hazat Navy
during the Emperor Wars, training their fighter jockeys and
even leading them on combat
missions against the other House fleets. Though he served
them faithfully for many years, and was wounded in the line
of duty several times, his relationship with the Hazat came
to an abrupt end after an incident about which neither he
nor the Hazat are very forthcoming. Olivares was stripped
of his rank and, according to rumour, would have lost his
head as well were it not for the intervention of a high-placed
friend in the League. The Hazat settled for banning him from
their space.
After
his military career came to an end, Olivares worked as a
freelance pilot and ship's master, traveling from one edge
of the Known
Worlds to the other in the service of various employers.
Then, in 4984, his father was killed during a pirate attack,
and Anselm abruptly found himself the proud owner of the
family galleon, the Bonaventure. Anselm took charge
of his father's legacy and began a new career as a free-trader
plying the trade routes of the Known Worlds. There was money
to be made during the Emperor Wars, for a free-trader willing
to take risks, and Anselm turned a tidy profit. Even after
the Wars ended, his innate daring and instinct for business
earned him a comfortable living.
Sometime
during his travels, Anselm ventured to Vargo. There he fell
in love with a Scraver lass whom he married, and together
they brought a child into the world. Yet thelove affairs
of guilders don't amount to a hill of beans in a universe
of scheming
nobles and fanatic priests, and fate saw fit to separate
Anselm from his beloved Teylar shortly after the birth of
their daughter, Amara. Teylar left Vargo in search of a man
involved in the death of her own mother: Anselm followed,
but never
found her. He roams the jumpweb in the Bonaventure,
keeping an eye out for his wife as he earns his keep as a
free trader.
After many years of wandering, his journey has returned
him once again to Vargo.
