Father Ambrose Augustus Gallo

Race: Human

Rank/Class: Orthodox Priest

Birthplace: Byzantium Secundus

Birthdate: 7 December 4955

Quote: "Would not the Pancreator say to us: 'Why have you let so many needy perish of hunger? Since you had gold, you should provide for their needs'... Could we say: 'I feared to leave the temple without ornament.' But that which can't be bought with gold does not take its value from gold. The best way to use gold is for the redemption of those in peril."

Description: Tall and slender, this man carries himself with an air of quiet dignity and thoughtful serenity that lends him a deeply spiritual presence. His skin is the color of rich chocolate, and his hair, shaved in a modest tonsure at the crown, has the hue and texture of steel wool. A kindly smile seems ever to dance upon the full lips beneath his broad nose, yet one's attention is drawn immediately to his eyes, of a gray that brings to mind a storm-tossed sea, yet radiating an abiding compassion.

Personality: Ambrose is calm and patient by nature, with a deep empathy for his fellow sentients. These qualities have served him well in the role of confessor, guiding wayward souls back toward the Light.

Entourage: Ambrose is frequently accompanied by novices and lay persons of the Church, who assist him in his good works.

Status: Missionary work on Vargo.

Active: 1999-Present

Ambrose was born in the slums of Byzantium Secundus around 4955, and orphaned at an early age. Left on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the Urth Orthodox sect, he came to hold the priests who raised him in high esteem, and sought to follow in their footsteps. A bright student with an agile mind and an abiding faith, he finished his seminary training at the top of his class and thereafter rose quickly through the ranks. Finding the Mahayana Orthodoxy to be most in line with his personal beliefs, he pursued that school of thought, although he tends to be more conservative than many of his fellow Mahayana. Once he was ordained into the White Priesthood, he devoted much of his time to working with the poor of ByzSec, bringing some measure of spiritual solace and physical comfort to those who live in the slums where he was born.

Until his assigment to Vargo almost all of his life was spent on the world of his birth, his only offworld travel a pilgrimage to Holy Terra. For several years he had served as rector to the seminary chapel of the University of Veridian, offering spiritual counsel to the students who came to him for confession. It was in this role that he came to the attention of Hierophant Marcus Aurelius Palamon, Archbishop of ByzSec, who later remembered Ambrose when he was looking for reliable priests to send to Vargo to fulfill the Church's mission there. Ambrose's tenure on Vargo was troubled. The native populace, resentful of the brutal treatment their own priests had received at the hands of the Inquisition, proved more intractable than Ambrose had expected. Furthermore, the heavy-handed leadership of Ambrose's superior, Archbishop Kraelian, only served to inflame the Vargen populace further.

Though discouraged, Ambrose rededicated himself to his mission, remaining on Vargo after Kraelian left his post for reasons of health (amidst rumors that he had been poisoned). In the end, Ambrose's disillusionment caused him to stumble in matters spiritual: he had a brief love affair with an al-Malik Countess, and lost sight of his mission on Vargo. After confessing his misstep to his superiors, he undertook a pilgrimage to Holy Terra as penance. He spent several years there, seeking enlightenment in mountaintop monastery in the Atlas mountains. Finally, his faith restored, Ambrose asked to be sent back to Vargo. He has returned there in the wake of the Vau interdiciton, committed to the task of steering Vargo's lost souls back into the warmth of the Light.
